Politics, as part of philosophical, historical, legal and sociological sciences, dates back to distant times, however, political science as a distinct academic discipline is rooted in bahaviouralism in early 20th century. Political science has many aspects and concerns in common with other social sciences as it incorporates several other areas of study. Since then, it has played vital role in pushing successfully social reforms around the globe and helping to avoid catastrophic blunders of the mankind.

Taking into account significance of the discipline in the post conflict Afghanistan, Avicenna University chose it to be one of the opening subjects in its programs. The country needed political development, amongst others, to enhance public participation and political competition that, in turn, requires Political Science to promote political awareness in Afghan community. Promoting political knowledge and training educated analysts could serve as a leading driver in transforming current socio-political milieu in Afghanistan.

Avicenna University strived to build on this and succeeded to improve the program both quantitatively and qualitatively. More competent cadre members were assigned; new syllabus was developed in line with the world’s academic standards and the country’s specific needs; hundreds of students were enrolled to take the course; numerous academic seminars were conducted to help students grasp a deeper understanding of the very critical subject matters, a number of books were authored and dozens of articles were published; more importantly, Master’s program was added to address the increasing needs for specialized study of political science.

The Faculty is dedicated and committed to train skilled political analysts with sharp understanding of national, regional and international affairs. Political Science graduates may fulfill any of the following roles:

  1. Providing expert services to the country’s diplomatic apparatus and missions;
  2. Acting as experts in domestic politics (serving as provincial or district governors, etc.);
  3. Acting as MPs and political party activists;
  4. Taking media-related jobs;
  5. Serving as public civil servants;
  6. Serving as political advisor to the government ministries;
  7. Conducting political researches; and
  8. Launching political surveys.

Departments

Political Science faculty consists of two departments:

  1. International Relations
  2. Political Thought

International Relations (IR)

IR Bachelor’s degree comprises of 137 course credits. Some of the very significant subjects taught during bachelor’s program include: Principles of IR, Development and Modernization, Introduction to Analysis of International Politics and Foreign Policy, Foreign Policy of the Great Powers, Political Sociology and Principles and Basics Of Democracy. However, IR Master’s degree includes 36 course credits in total, some essential subjects of which are as follow: Peace and International Security Studies, Theories of International Relations, Regional Studies, International Political Economy, Afghanistan’s Foreign Policy and Human Rights in International Relations.

Political Thought

To get a credible grasp of a society including Afghanistan, one needs to study the country’s political thought. Political Thought, as an academic discipline, serves to respond to the very essential questions of human kind on political system, political order and power relationships and presents accurate solutions to the relevant questions. The program includes 136 course credits and following are some of its critical subjects: Western Political Thought, Political Thought in Twentieth Century, Islamic Political Thought, Basics of Political Thought in Islam, Muslim Thinkers’ Political Thought.
